Dan McMahon Pottery
Dan McMahon Pottery New Collection coming soon
Dan uses the salt fired technique for
"grunge" influenced appearance. He also uses glass glaze, a recipe from
North Carolina folk potters, made of oak ashes, crushed green glass,
and slip. "It is the interest in nature and the function earth has in sustaining life that inspires me to work in ceramics. Working with clay gives me a sense of unity with nature bringing out its focus on function. I work intuitively, starting with a function and a basic shape, allowing the clay to interpret these ideas as I guide it into shape. Glaze application amplifies the subconscious elements of the pieces allowing happy accidents and grace to influence the design. The earthy appearance of salt firing gives to the clay finishes the natural appeal of the works. With function as my main focus, I delve into all the ways a pot can be used and let the forms come out from its utility. My pottery is very high energy and brings new life into any surrounding it inhabits and what ever purpose it is employed in.
